Power of Girls
Inspire a girl in your life to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others as well as her own.
Sponsored by Indianapolis Power & Light Company.
Power of Girls is a day-long philanthropy education program for girls age 13-16 and a special woman in their life.
Power of Girls 2011 has concluded. Check back for more information on future events, and watch the video below to see what recent participants have to say about their experience.
About Power of Girls
Spend a meaningful day with a special girl in your life. Power of Girls offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn first hand about the needs of girls and women in central Indiana. Girls and their sponsors will participate in an interactive program of philanthropy education. They will:
- learn to make the greatest impact with their time, talent and treasure
- collaborate in a decision-making process with a significant outcome
- understand better the needs of girls and women in our community
- learn what constitutes and how to recognize healthy relationships
The cost of this program is $250 per adult/girl couple. Thanks to operational support from Indianapolis Power & Light Company, the entire amount is tax-deductible. A portion of the money contributed will help fund programs of The Julian Center and Women's Fund of Central Indiana. Participating girls will determine how to allocate The Julian Center contribution based on the day's experience and a grantmaking process led by an experienced facilitator.
The content will be age appropriate for girls 13-16 years old. Sorry, we cannot make exceptions to the younger age limit.
At the end of the day, a keepsake will be presented. The lasting gift — the inspiration of daughters, granddaughters, nieces and young friends — will be taken home in the hearts of the girls.
Power of Girls is a program of GO: Give Back.
What Participants Say About Power of Girls
"I feel like Power of Girls was a meaningful way to educate my daughter on domestic violence and how it can affect anyone. I hope she will be better prepared to recognize and to address the early signs of abuse if it were to enter her life."
- Kristy Lombardo, mother
"It was amazing experience. Everything we did—from the people telling information about the cause and the dangers of domestic violence, to actually talking to the moms and the kids—was just eye opening. I learned that The Julian Center doesn't just help these families by giving them a home, but it provides them with medical care, schooling, and even helping them find jobs and making sure they are headed in the right direction before they leave."
- Samantha Reese, 13
"Most surprising to me was really understanding that domestic violence, whether physical, mental, or verbal, affects all members of society. That we need to be aware of this important societal issue and do what we can to help others. Power of Girls makes me want to be more involved, to do what I can to help others, and to spend more time with my daughter on causes such as this, so that we can together help others."
- Melissa Proffitt Reese, mother

"I've had a GO Fund since I was 2. When I turned 6, I started going to GO education sessions. A couple times a year, we all get together. I love these sessions because it's the one place where I can be with other girls who care about giving."
