Concord Neighborbood Center Provides Invaluable Services to Indy's Southside

by Gerri Pagach

Last month, along with coworkers and Women’s Fund donors, I had the opportunity to see firsthand all that Concord Neighborhood Center does for its community. Located on Indy’s Southside, Concord takes pride in being recognized as the leading provider of needed social services for individuals and families. The Concord Neighborhood Center has been living its mission to provide opportunities that advance the education, health, well-being and independence for near-Southside families since 1875.

Social services provided include employment assistance, educational programs, emergency assistance, family literacy programs, wellness classes, health clinics, activities for seniors – the list goes on and on. 80% of Concord programs support kids and single moms.

The child serving programs include licensed, nationally accredited early childhood education to children age 3 to 5 years. School age children participate in before and after school programming that includes things like sports and recreation, homework help, and social activities.

During our visit, we were honored to meet Aniza, a 14 year old success story for Concord that has been involved in their programming since pre-school. Aniza shared with us that she would not be a successful student with aspirations of becoming an FBI Agent, attorney, or ball player without the help, guidance and support of the Concord Staff. She enjoys playing basketball & volleyball and gathering with friends during Now for the Future (NFTF) sessions.

NFTF is teen specific programming that is offered to youth age 10+. Teen nights are offered weekly and include college and career readiness, academic support, and social activities.

Without the mission and vision of Concord, people on the south side wouldn’t have these quality programs and services.

Since 2000, Women’s Fund has supported women and girl’s programming and operations at Concord Neighborhood Center with $150,000 in awarded grants. I was pleased to learn more about this wonderful asset to the Southside community!
