Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration
Title IX is a celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, on June 23. This landmark legislation has done more than advance women's access to high school and collegiate sport; it has opened access to many academic opportunities for women and girls. The legislation, signed in 1972 states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity."
This legislation clearly enabled women and girls to access opportunities not previously available. Now, as we mark the 40th year since it was passed, many girls today do not realize the sacrifice and leadership of women who came before them. I was excited to learn that locally Indiana Fever is marking the event during their June 21st game. Women's Fund is proud to partner with some elements of these festivities. Before the game, a special event will honor nine trailblazers who have benefitted from Title IX, not just in athletics. Our Executive Director, Jennifer Pope Baker, is even being honored as a "Local Trailblazer" - read her thoughts here. Women's Fund and the Fever Foundation will benefit from an auction throughout the game that evening, featuring special signed items by leading females in sports (example pictured, right - credit: Indiana Fever). The auction will be held in the main concourse from the time the gates open at 6 p.m. through the end of halftime.
One element I am personally excited about is Women's Fund's sponsorship of girls to attend the June 21st game. They will even be seated in Section 9. The girls will receive information about Title IX, in the hopes they better understand the importance of this historic legislation. Look for pictures and highlights after the event.
I am looking forward to participating in the festivities next Thursday and hope to see some Women's Fund friends there. Please share your stories of how you, your family, and friends have benefitted from Title IX with us!
