Curtain Closes on IRT’s Leading Lady: Priscilla Lindsay

by Kelly Young

When Jennifer Pope Baker and I first talked about writing a blog honoring IRT’s leading lady, Priscilla Lindsay, (pictured left in Love Letters), I was excited to not only talk about her accomplishments here in Indianapolis, but also her new role as the first woman to chair the Theatre Department at Michigan. Both are quite impressive in their own right. During her 33 of the IRT’s 38 seasons, Priscilla has appeared in more than 80 productions; she directed numerous productions, including a 10-year run directing IRT's holiday classic, A Christmas Carol; and she has been an avid theatre educator. Her new leading role is as the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Drama in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Sadly, Priscilla’s last lines at the IRT (until her fans can coax her back to the IRT stage) were a fond farewell to her friends, fellow actors, supporters and staff.

On Tuesday, the IRT hosted a celebration party honoring Priscilla. It was evident from the moment I walked into the lobby that there was so much love, admiration and respect for Priscilla. She has touched so many lives, young and old – on stage and off, and that’s what Jennifer and I are excited to spotlight.

On stage, her talent, authentic spirit, and generous heart have thrilled audiences. Her inspiring work as a theatre educator has encouraged and motivated young people to appreciate the true art of theatre. I was touched by her heartfelt invitation to the children at the event to stay in touch with her and to visit her in MI – and I was reminded how my own daughter and niece (pictured right with Priscilla) were in complete awe of her when they met "the director" of A Christmas Carol last year on opening night.

Off stage, Priscilla was a dedicated volunteer. As Jennifer pointed out, she was extremely passionate about an organization Women’s Fund funds: Craine House. As a board member and a volunteer, she committed her time and talent to an organization that serves as an alternative sentencing program for non-violent female offenders and their pre-school aged children.

Priscilla is a class-act and will be tremendously missed by her fans, friends and community organizations blessed to know her.
